Aeration & Seeding
Services
Summer causes a lot of stress on fescue lawns. This can result in bare patches and thin areas leading to erosion and weeds. Fescue does not auto-regenerate with regular mowing (we don’t allow it to grow tall enough to go to seed naturally) To repair these, Aeration and seeding may be necessary. September and October are the best months to complete these tasks.
In the softest area’s, you should assume that our aerator can puncture down up to 5 inches. However, typical cores are 1 to 2 inches long, depending on how tough the soil is and aerator pressure setting.
What is Aeration?
Aeration revolves around perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water, seed, and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps alleviate soil compaction and provides a new home for seed to germinate.
What is Overseeding?
Overseeding is spreading grass seed over existing turf to fill in thin or bare areas, improving lawn thickness and health.
Benefits of Aeration and Overseeding
- Improved Soil Health: Aeration reduces compaction, allowing the soil to breathe and absorb nutrients.
- Enhanced Root Growth: Aeration promotes deeper and stronger root growth.
- Thicker, Healthier Lawn: Overseeding leads to a more lush, dense lawn, reducing the risk of weeds.
- Virginia Climate Considerations: Fescue and Kentucky bluegrass thrive in Virginia’s climate and benefit from aeration and overseeding.
Why Choose Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass?
- Fescue: Fescue is tolerant of shade and does well in Virginia’s cooler fall and winter seasons.
- Kentucky Bluegrass: This grass is hardy, self-repairs, and works well when mixed with fescue for Virginia lawns.
Core aeration and overseeding at Lake Anna Overview;
Included in our Core aeration and overseeding service is core aeration through the entire yard. Double or triple pass in the tougher sections of the lawn, like thin areas or bare spots. Our technicians will use their judgement if more is needed in order to penetrate the soil. We spread a turf blend seed of Fescue and Kentucky bluegrass at a rate of 5 pounds per 1,000SF of lawn area. Established and full areas will get overseeding but the barest and thinnest areas will get a higher rate of seed. When the service is completed we will leave a bag with 1.5 pounds of seed for the homeowner to use at their discretion. This is enough seed for 300 Square feet that could be used to touch up any lawn areas. There is also some simple instructions on the aftercare of the new seed like watering, mowing, and leaf cleanup.
We use dedicated units that are designed for aeration only. We do not use low quality pull behind units that often will not do as thorough of a job as our units will.
A WORD OF CAUTION
When aerating, It is important to mark all utility and shallow irrigation pipes/heads.
Examples of utility lines are satellite, internet, invisible fence, propane, irrigation, or any other shallow lines that may be buried in the lawn area. The previous utilities are typically NOT marked by Ms. Utility.
Electric, phone, gas, and cable are usually deep enough to not be concerned with.
Our Seed Blend
Local Landscapers uses a turf blend seed that is 90% Fescue and 10% bluegrass
It is blue tag certified and has well over a 90% germination rate.
